France: Orange dominate our latest network tests

Ahead of Bouygues, SFR and Free Mobile, Orange lead both of our latest download and upload speed charts based on data collected between April and June, with average download speeds on 4G of 24.15Mbps and average upload speeds on 4G of 9.64Mbps.

In a recent interview with Reuters, Delegate Chief Executive Officer for Orange, Ramon Fernandez, said Orange would be open to ‘telecom tie-up talks’ with other operators in the French market but are not likely to be the instigator of such discussions. Reuters also reported SFR was approached last month by Bouygues, which suggests it’s likely we could see further discussions on consolidation of the French telecoms market in the near future.

Free Mobile top our latency chart

Averaging speeds of just 15.5ms on 4G, Free Mobile sit at the top of our latency chart for the last quarter, with second place Bouygues achieving average latency speeds of only 24.7ms.

The success of Free Mobile in France looks to have been replicated in Italy as parent company, Iliad, sign 1 million customers in just 50 days. Their opening offer of 30GB of data, unlimited voice minutes and unlimited texts for just €6 per month has been snapped up quicker than many expected, as other operators in the market start to bring down prices in order to compete.

Bouygues leapfrog Orange for upload speed in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

Although still second place in Ile-de-France and Aquitaine-Limousin-Poitou-Charentes, Bouygues take the top spot for our latest upload speed test in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes with average speeds of 9.03 Mbps.

Across the country, France’s regulator Arcep has laid out an ambitious roadmap to launch 5G in at least one major city by 2020, and provide 5G coverage of the main transport routes by 2025. A plan we’re certainly hoping is successful and one that appears to be gathering momentum as 22 5G trials have already taken place since the beginning of the year.
