Introduction

In our annual benchmark report for Sweden, we have evaluated 168,310 speed and latency tests, conducted on the smartphones of real-world users of national mobile operators within Common Coverage Areas between July 1st and December 31st, 2021.

2021 — the year that should have seen 5G implementation at near completion — was instead the year of playing catch-up for the Swedish telecoms industry due to the pandemic greatly reducing productivity. However, in the first month of 2021, Sweden completed its final 5G spectrum auction for 3.5 GHz, with Telia securing 120 MHz and Tele2 and Telenor also securing a 100 MHz slice through their joint venture, Net4Mobility.

In May, Nokia won a 5-year contract to provide equipment to help expand the 5G network set up by Net4Mobility. The deal will not only increase 5G capabilities but also greatly improve legacy 4G performance. In July 2021, 3 Sweden claimed 16% of its population is covered by 5G, with expansion occurring in the city of Gothenburg. While there are movements in 5G, there is still more for Sweden to achieve. In the first half of 2021, only 3% of all mobile subscriptions in Sweden were 5G, according to the Swedish communications regulator PTS.

In Tutela’s annual Global State of Mobile Experience report, Sweden placed in the top 10 for highest Excellent Consistent Quality. 3 Sweden placed joint 22nd along with Telenor Denmark out of 30 operators analyzed. Telia Sweden narrowly made it into the top 30 list, placing joint 28th along with Singtel Singapore with an Excellent Consistent Quality of 82.7%.

Understanding this report

This report encompasses the following experience KPIs:

  • Excellent Consistent Quality - the percentage of the time that a network met the minimum recommended performance thresholds for HD video, group video conference calls and gaming
  • Core Consistent Quality - the percentage of the time that a network met the minimum recommended performance thresholds for lower performance applications including SD video, voice calls and web browsing
  • Coverage Score - the relative geographic coverage of an operator, compared with other operators, scored out of 1000 (please note that the score is not a representation of the percentage geographic coverage in a country)
  • Video experience - determined based on a range of video specific KPIs including stall rate, resolution and buffering time

To ensure a fair comparison between operator performance, Tutela limits the results used in our comparisons to those collected within Common Coverage Areas.
