TIM delivers fastest average mobile internet speeds across Italy, Vodafone struggles with packet loss

Written by Steve | 19-Dec-2017 11:00:00
TIM delivered the fastest download and upload speeds across both 3G and 4G networks in Italy according to our network testing in August, September and October. It registered an average download speed of 10.3 Mbps compared to Vodafone's 8.5 Mbps.

TIM also scored above the average benchmark for upload speeds, jitter, latency and packet loss.

Vodafone also registered above-average upload speeds and jitter. However, it did struggle with packet loss of 5.84% significantly below the average and well behind TIM's 1.52%. Over 64.9 million records were analysed to gain these results.

For Vodafone, relatively high packet loss could possibly be the result of wireless backhaul connectivity or network congestion.

About our testing

Tutela tests mobile networks by crowdsourcing anonymous sensor data from hundreds of millions of Android and iOS mobile users across the world. This enables us to collect billions of measurements every day and gain a real-world understanding of the mobile experience that mobile users are getting - not just in major towns & cities, but in all parts of the world.

Our testing methodology is designed to simulate typical user mobile behaviour, such as downloading a photograph or web page, rather than measuring the maximum performance, such as the peak download speed during a very large file transfer (which very few users will achieve) so that we can understand a typical user's experience.
