MWC 2019 Live Network Performance Dashboard

Written by Chris Mills | 21-Feb-2019 08:00:00

Every February, the mobile industry's top 100,000 decision-makers descend on Barcelona for Mobile World Congress. In addition to being a critical networking opportunity, the conference is also an extreme stress-test of mobile networks in and around Fira Gran Via, and the attendees - including C-suite execs of every major telecoms group in the world - expect perfection.

To keep an eye on which operators are handling the peak load the best, Tutela is monitoring network quality tests from its user base in and around the conference, and uploading the results into the dashboard below, which is updated daily.

Tutela collects billions of measurements from millions of devices globally every day, but for this event, we're just focusing on a handful of network quality metrics that best reflect how the networks are dealing with potential congestion.

As well as monitoring the underlying network quality measurements (download speed, upload speed, latency, and signal strength), we're also keeping a close eye on excellent consistent quality, Tutela's metric for whether a wireless connection is good enough for users to use demanding apps like HD video calling, video-focused social networking (like Snapchat), or live streaming 1080p video.

Excellent Consistent Quality

KPI Average download speed Average upload speed Latency Jitter Packet loss
Minimum acceptable value 4 Mbps 2 Mbps 50 ms 30 ms ~0%

When dealing with massive crowds, the challenge for network operators is making sure that everyone has a good-enough connection – which is quite different than, say, achieving triple-digit download speeds when the network isn't loaded.
