TIM tops network performance in Brazil - but Claro is the fastest

Written by Steve | 28-Nov-2017 10:04:00

TIM provided the best overall network performance for their subscribers in Brazil during October. To establish quality of service we measured 5 major quality indicators: download and upload speeds, jitter, latency and packet loss across the country’s four main network providers. TIM ranked highest overall, helped by it’s market-leading latency results and on-par average download and upload speeds.

While TIM achieved the best overall quality ranking, Claro network actually registered the fastest average download speeds (across combined 3G and 4G networks) with an average download speed of 5.9 Mbps and upload speed of 2.6 Mbps, based on over 1.5 million download speed tests taken during October.

However, Claro was let down by higher than average packet loss and jitter results. This suggests that further investments in backhaul and core networks could be recquired.

About our testing

Tutela tests mobile networks by crowdsourcing anonymous sensor data from hundreds of millions of Android and iOS mobile users across the world. This enables us to collect billions of measurements every day and gain a real-world understanding of the mobile experience that mobile users are getting - not just in major towns & cities, but in all parts of the world.

Our testing methodology is designed to simulate typical user mobile behaviour, such as downloading a photograph or web page, rather than measuring the maximum performance, such as the peak download speed during a very large file transfer (which very few users will achieve) so that we can understand a typical user's experience.
